UHS & Suncrest 8th Grade Bands, WVMEA Honors

Congratulations with sheet music

It just keeps getting better!

2-28-2022 Congratulations to The Suncrest Middle School Jazz Ensemble, named as the WV State Honors Jazz Ensemble!  They will perform this Friday (March 4), along with state honors finalist, The Suncrest 8th grade concert band in the Charleston Civic Center.

"It is extremely rare to have two groups from the same school recognized as the top instrumental music programs in West Virginia.  This is also the first time in Suncrest history to win a jazz honors award," commented Neil King, Monongalia County Music Coordinator.

"The Jazz Ensemble, received superior ratings at the Northern Regional Jazz Festival held on Saturday.  They were recorded and then entered into the aural round, where three independent judges listened blindly to the other groups that received Superior ratings at their respected state regions. The winner was selected based on the composite scores of the three adjudicators," King stated.

"Also participating from our county in the state jazz regional was Morgantown and University High. University High School  received a Superior rating and moved to the second round where they finished third in the state."

Congratulations to Neil King and Mark Palmer!  Both will be honored on Thursday by the WVMEA Executive Board for 25 plus years of service to West Virginia in Music Education.

2-14-2022 Congratulations to two Monongalia County Schools' bands for being named West Virginia Music Educators Association (WVMEA) State Honor Bands! The honor band designation is one of which the band program selected is recognized by music educators throughout West Virginia as an explementary group - one that displays performance excellence from top to bottom.

This year’s winners are:

THE WVMEA High School Honor Band Finalist

THE UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL WIND ENSEMBLE, under the direction of Mr. Mark S. Palmer

THE WVMEA Middle School Honor Band Finalist

THE SUNCREST MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADE BAND, under the direction of Mr. Neil L. King

Honor band designees must go through an extensive process via audition. The adjudicators for the award are Professors of Music from across the country, as to prevent any biases.

The work that goes into becoming an honors ensemble is a long process. What an accomplishment for these hard working students and band directors! Congratulations and we send our best as the groups travel to perform at the WVMEA State Conference on March 4th in Charleston, WV.
