Mon County BOE Selects New Superintendent

The Monongalia County Board of Education at its May 22 meeting unanimously approved the employment of Eddie R. Campbell, Jr., Ed. D., as the county’s new superintendent of schools.

Dr. Campbell will assume his new duties July 1, following the June 30 expiration of the board’s current contract with county superintendent Dr. Frank Devono.

Campbell accepted the board’s offer of an annual salary of $150,000 and a two-year contract.

“We interviewed Dr. Campbell earlier today,” said Mon County BOE president Dr. Barbara Parsons during the May 22 board meeting, “and it was long interview – very comfortable with a lot of questions both ways. Dr. Campbell is excited at the prospect of moving into a bigger job and is looking forward to working with our staff, board and community.”

Campbell has served as superintendent of Tucker County Schools since 2011. The Tucker County system is comprised of three schools with a total student population of approximately 1,000 and a $13 million annual budget.

Campbell was recommended to the board for consideration by an ad hoc citizens search committee comprised of approximately 20 Monongalia County residents. He was among several candidates vying for the position following selection inquiries conducted by the Orion-Delta Group, a Pittsburgh-based executive search firm. Orion-Delta was contracted by the Monongalia County Board of Education to facilitate the recruitment process.

Approximately 40 county residents and school personnel took advantage of an opportunity to meet candidate Campbell at a public “meet-and-greet” session facilitated by search committee chair Ashley Martucci May 21 in the University High School library.

During the meet-and-greet, Campbell said he “learned to be a superintendent during his seven years in Tucker County.”

“Dr. Devono took me under his wing during those seven years and taught me how to be a superintendent in West Virginia,” Campbell said.

Prior to his employment in Tucker County, Campbell served as principal of the Davis-Ramoth Memorial School in Kotzebue, Alaska (2010-2011) and as executive director of the Livingston American School in Shanghai, China (2004-2010).

Earlier in his career in education administration, Campbell was employed as assistant principal and principal of three schools in Virginia.

A 1988 graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor of arts degree in history, Campbell also holds a master of education degree with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction from George Mason University and doctor of education degree in educational leadership from the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education.

Campbell and his wife, Zhilan Zhang, are the parents of a 12-year-old son and currently reside in Parsons, W.Va.
